A Call to Prayer: Lifting Up Our Pastors in Times of Trial

Many of us have recently been saddened by the news of Dr. Steven Lawson stepping down due to personal failings. Such events serve as sobering reminders of the frailty of human nature and the spiritual battles that all believers, including our leaders, face daily. While it's natural to feel disappointment or even disillusionment, these moments also present an opportunity for us to rally together in prayer and support for those who shepherd our spiritual communities.

The Importance of Praying for Our Pastors

Pastors carry a significant weight of responsibility. They are called to lead, teach, and guide the flock, often while navigating their own personal challenges. Scripture reminds us in 1 Corinthians 10:12, "Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall." No one is immune to temptation or failure, and our leaders are no exception. They need our prayers now more than ever.

When we lift our pastors in prayer, we are all part of this collective effort. We:

• Provide Spiritual Support: Our prayers invite God's protection and strength over those who lead us, helping them resist temptation and remain steadfast in their calling.
• Foster Unity within the Body: Praying together for our leaders unites us as a community, reinforcing our shared commitment to Christ and His church.

• Our Shared Faith: Despite differences, we are united by our belief in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. This shared faith is a powerful bond that unites us in our prayers for our pastors and the broader body of Christ.
• Leadership is a universal challenge. Pastors everywhere face similar struggles—spiritual warfare, burnout, and the pressures of leadership. Comprehending this fosters empathy and strengthens our prayers.
• The Strength of a Unified Church: A church that prays together stands stronger against division and is better equipped to fulfill the Great Commission.

In times like these, it's helpful to revisit the biblical principles that define godly leadership:

1. Character Matters: Leaders are called to reflect God's holy character by living lives of integrity, righteousness, and faithfulness.
2. Servant Leadership: Authority comes from God, and leaders are to exercise it humbly, serving rather than dominating.
3. Accountability: Leaders are accountable to God and to their communities. Safeguards like plurality of leadership and congregational accountability are vital.
4. The Example of Christ: Jesus is our ultimate model—a perfectly righteous, just, and compassionate leader.

Taking Action: How We Can Pray

1. Pray for Restoration: Ask God to restore those who have fallen, granting them repentance, healing, and reconciliation.
2. Pray for Protection: Cover our pastors in prayer against temptation, discouragement, and spiritual attack.
3. Pray for Wisdom: Seek God's guidance for our leaders as they make decisions that affect their congregations.
4. Pray for Their Families: Remember the pastors' families, who often share in the burdens and sacrifices of ministry.

Encouragement for the Congregation

Let us not lose heart when leaders stumble. Instead, may we be driven to our knees, recognizing our collective dependence on God's grace. The church is not built on any one individual but on Christ Himself, who remains the steadfast head of the church. As the elders of Trinity Bible Church of Dallas aptly stated, "Jesus Christ will continue to lead His Church...long after any other man."

Standing Together in Faith

In challenging times, the true strength of the church is revealed—not in the perfection of its leaders but in the faithfulness of its people to uphold one another in love. Let us pray fervently for our pastors and the broader body of Christ. By doing so, we participate in God's redemptive work, support those who guide us, and reinforce the unity and resilience of the church.

May we always remember Hebrews 13:7's exhortation, "Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith." Let us honor our leaders by lifting them up, standing with them in times of trial, and walking together in the light of God's grace.
